2. Scientific Explanation of Mechanism
I received reports from Portuguese physicists who had worked out that for a few moments on 15th August, several background clouds could have precisely aligned to reflect the sun's rays (from SW) and focus them through a foreground cloud template in order to project the bright cross image towards the ferry (to the W).

It was suggested, however, this was very unlikely to have been a random event.

(Its a bit like finding that an electric torch has formed itself from its constituent chemical elements in the absence of any human manufacturers.. Technically possible, but not likely.)

In conclusion, the scientists felt that, although a physical mechanism for production of the image could be postulated, there was room for intervention of an external force to make it happen on the day. They recommended I obtain a theological view on the matter.

3. Psychological Factors
Of course odd shapes appear in the sky every day but mean little to us other than indicators of the weather. The Caminha Cross may seem important because its unusual shape and strength strikes a resonance with a familiar religious symbol.

So, you may at this stage be confident the Caminha Cross was a random weather event that requires no further explanation. If so, you can mark this mystery as solved and set it comfortably to one side.
